Semantic flow¶
Semantic flow is the movement, refinement and reconciliation of meaning as data crosses bounded contexts and organisational boundaries.
It is different from data flow.
- Data flow moves data.
- Metadata inflow makes context and evidence available.
- Semantic flow makes meaning understandable and interoperable across boundaries.
- Ontology represents governed shared meaning that emerges from that process.
Why this matters¶
A semantic layer added only at the end of the pipeline can improve consumption, but it cannot reliably recover all of the knowledge lost upstream.
Semantic flow therefore starts close to the source and preserves provenance, authority and version as meaning is projected into products, contracts, schemas, APIs and analytical models.

Architecture improves when its assumptions are challenged. Say which kind of contribution you're making:
- Challenge I disagree because…
- Evidence We've seen this too…
- Question How would this work when…?
- Alternative Another way to approach this…
